Queen Elizabeth Ii has bestowed a new title on her husband Prince Philip to mark his 90th birthday and recognise his years of service in the British navy.
The Duke of Edinburgh celebrated the age milestone on Friday (10Jun11) and the monarch made sure the occasion would be a memorable one by naming the birthday boy Lord High Admiral, formally placing him as the head of the Royal Navy.
However, the title is only in name and he will not hold any authority over the U.K.'s naval force.
The Duke served his country during World War II and stepped down from his duties in 1952, when Elizabeth took over the throne from her father George VI.
A military band paid tribute to Prince Philip on Friday by playing a rendition of Happy Birthday outside London's Buckingham Palace, while a 62-gun salute also took place at the Tower of London.
