Television Centre, home to shows including Doctor Who, Monty Python and Blue Peter, could be sold to developers or become a “creative quarter” in a joint venture.
The latter option would see it become a base for production companies and a nostalgic BBC visitor centre.
BBC bosses claimed yesterday that “maximising value” for licence fee payers was its main priority.
The West London building, which opened in 1960, has Grade II listed status and is used by 5,000 staff.
But it will be empty by 2015 when workers move to sites like MediaCity, in Salford and Broadcasting House, in Central London.
Richard Deverell, who is heading the BBC’s W12 project, said: “Television Centre has played an extraordinary and central role in the BBC’s history.”
